The Lectionary Readings for Worship

At St. James our Scripture readings in worship are organized into a three year cycle called a lectionary. We use the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) which is a schedule of readings published in 1992. This schedule is followed (more or less) by most mainline English-speaking churches. It was created to account for the seasons of the church year and with the consultation of many Protestant and Roman Catholic scholars.

It is important to note that these readings are what we plan to use on the Sundays listed. In our tradition, the preacher of the day may change the readings as she or he feels led by the Holy Spirit particularly if there is a current event or local occasion which calls for a different sermon than the lectionary readings would warrant.
